Murray Tourney Raises $15,000

Over 100 golfers from all over the Bay Area came together for the Dr. Dwight Murray, Sr., Invitational Golf Tournament on May 3. In addition to enjoying a great day on the Napa Valley Country Club’s links, the golfers helped raise a little over $15,000 toward purchase of a new CT scanner for Queen of the Valley.

Now heading into its 27th year, the tournament has grown into something of a family affair. Many of the golfers are friends and relatives of the late Dr. Murray, a former chief of staff at Queen of the Valley and former president of the American Medical Association, and of his son, Dr. Dwight Murray, Jr., who’s currently on the hospital’s medical staff.

“Many of the people come because they respect the type of man Dr. Murray was and the physicians like him,” says Gary Rose, who co-chaired the event. “It’s a good group and many of them come back year after year.”

Says John Imrie, the tournament’s other co-chair, “This is a low-key event with a lot of tradition to it. And every year people turn out and are happy to do so.”

He notes that the same spirit is evident among the tournament volunteers. “There’s a core of people who help with everything from registration to the auction and who do a great job,” he says. “We couldn’t pull this off without them.”

The first-place finishers in this year’s tournament were long-time participants Jim Hedemark and Phil Hicks, who won by one stroke. There was a five-way tie for second.
