Friends Tour Cancer Center

More than 60 members of the Circle of Friends, QVH Foundation's annual giving club, got an insider's view of the Queen's Cancer Center as part of the club's get-together on Feb, 1.

Circle members and Radiation Oncology Department Manager Michael Mulvey listen as radiation oncologist James Knister, MD (right) explains how radiation treatment technologies have advanced in recent years.

Cancer Center staff showed the assembled Circle members the latest cancer-fighting equipment, much of it acquired with help from the Foundation, and explained the many tools physicians now have to choose from for cancer treatment.

QVH President Dennis Sisto, urologist Thomas Hildreth, MDM, and oncologist Christian Anderson, MD, examin the new brachytherapy equipment for treatment of prostate cancer recently purchased by the Cancer Center with help from the Foundation.

The tour was one of several educational oppurtunites to open the Circle of Friends members during the year. In the year 2000, Circle members gave $86,000 to the Foundation, a significant increase over the previous year.

"The Cancer Center staff did a wonderful job of showing us the equipment they use for treatment, and Circle members told me they were very impressed to see that our hospital's technologies rival what's available in major cities," says Maxine Jacobs, the Foundation trustee who chairs the Circle of Friends. "It was very moving to see how excited everyone was to learn more about what the hospital does."
