In Memory: Elvira Ross, 1900-2000

Elvira Ross, one of the founding trustees of Queen of the Valley Hospital Foundation, died in Napa on Dec. 5. She was 100 years old and her long life was filled with service to her community.

She was married to William Ross II in 1925. The couple lived in San Francisco from 1932 until 1942, when Mr. Ross retired from his post as advertising director of the San Francisco Chronicle and the couple retired to Napa. Mr. Ross died in 1956.

As soon as she arrived in Napa, Mrs. Ross became very active with the newly founded Community Projects, Inc., as well as many other service activities. Because of her interest in the community's well-being, she was asked to be one of the 32 Napa business and social leaders who signed the incorporation papers for the QVH Foundation in 1969 and made up its first Board of Trustees. Mrs. Ross remained an honorary trustee of the Foundation until her death.

"Elvira Ross was a wonderful woman and a link to an earlier generation that was far-sighted about building for the future," said Foundation Executive Director David Johnson. "We will miss her, but we'll never forget the important role she played in the history of the Foundation and our community."
