Two of the
Foundation's trustees are now in their third term on the Board. Both
men share a commitment to community service in general, and to Queen
of the Valley in particular.
Richard Bennett
was one of the many Foundation trustees recruited by Napa attorney Jim
Fogarty, whose father, Walter, was one of the Foundation's founders.
"I was thrilled to be asked," Richard recalls. "Several
of my good friends were physicians, and they had been telling me how
lucky Napa was to have a hospital of this quality. It was clear to me
that the Queen was one of the valley's real assets."
Richard, formerly a real-estate broker and now a grapegrower, says being
on the Board has only increased his appreciation of the hospital. "A
lot goes on in terms of services to the community that most people don't
know about," he says. "It's intensified my desire to see the
hospital stay strong and viable - especially as I get older myself!"
One of the greatest pleasures of his tenure on the Board so far has
been the chance to get to know his fellow trustees. "I've met some
very dedicated, unselfish people who give a lot to the hospital and
therefore to the whole community. They are amazingly dedicated. I hope
that someday I can tap someone on the shoulder, the way Jim Fogarty
tapped me, and introduce new people to this effort."
Bill
Dodd,
despite being very busy with his new career as a Napa County supervisor,
maintains his ties with the Foundation. "Most communities our size
aren't blessed with the medical technology and expertise that we have
at the Queen," he says. "That drives me to stay involved."
Bill attended Foundation events and volunteered to help out with the
QVHF concerts at Silverado in the 1980s. It seemed natural to take his
participation to the next level by joining the Board - so natural that
he can no longer remember exactly who first recruited him.
Over the years Bill has served on the Executive Committee and headed
the Donor Recognition Committee, and honoring donors remains a special
interest. "Recognition is absolutely key to philanthropy. We've
done some neat things," he says, pointing to the growing popularity
of the annual reception honoring donors, the plans underway to upgrade
the Hall of Honor, and the expanded donor listings in Foundation Focus.
"But donor recognition is a job that's never done."
Like Richard, Bill says the personal relationships he's developed with
other Board members and Foundation staff have been very gratifying.
"I'm active with many community groups," he says, "and
the quality of the people involved with the Foundation isn't surpassed
anywhere."
