‘Day’ Celebrates Americana

What’s as American as Crackerjacks, apple pie, and the Stars and Stripes? The answer is the 23rd annual “Day for the Queen,” which is adopting an Americana theme for its year 2000 edition.

The event on Friday, Aug.18, takes place at Silverado Country Club and Resort. It includes tennis and golf tournaments, a fashion show and luncheon, plus an evening banquet at Silverado’s famed Grove and dancing under the stars.

There will also be a silent auction of scores of enticing items, including some extraordinary French and Napa Valley wines (see sidebar this page) that no enophile will want to miss.

Proceeds from this year’s “Day” will go toward purchase of a new CT scanner for Queen of the Valley Hospital. “We are very fortunate to have a hospital like the Queen. It’s always there and always open—even when you least expect to need help,” says Ann Healy, who is chairing “Day for the Queen” with her husband, Francis Healy, MD, and Maxine and Jay Jacobs.

Ann notes that the hospital performed 5,669 CT scans last year. “Both my mother and my son needed CT scans within the last six months,” she adds, “so I know how important it is to purchase new equipment that will keep the hospital on the cutting edge of technology.”

In addition to supporting a worthy cause, “Day for the Queen” is one of Napa’s most popular summer events, with something for everyone. During the daytime there’s competitive golf and tennis. The men’s and women’s tennis is being chaired by Tom Young, Ed Farver, and Marlene Kniveton. Golf on Silverado’s North Course has two shotgun starts at 7:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. Chairmen Kent Fry and Dennis Pedisich anticipate an early sell-out of the popular tournament.

Another option is the star-spangled fashion show presenting the latest styles from The Mustard Seed and Craig Williamson’s Menswear. Chairwomen for the show and luncheon are Martha Carlson, Michele Farver, and Susan Jinks.

And in the evening, join the fun at one of the valley’s best parties. The banquet is being coordinated by Jim McKeever, while the silent auction is chaired by Christine Steltzner, Carolyn Tapper, and Joy Orstadt. The evening comes to a rousing conclusion with dancing under the stars to live music by the Tim Hockenberry Trio.
