Board Welcomes Four
New Trusties

In January the Foundation welcomed four new members to its Board of Trustees. “Jayne Morrell and the rest of the Nominating Committee did an outstanding job,” says Board President Jim Tidgewell. “The new trustees are a great group, full of talent and energy.”

Tim Herman is setting up his own foundation—devoted to helping youngsters avoid substance abuse and violence—as well as joining the QVHF Board. Last summer he sold his company, Delatech, a manufacturer of anti-pollution equipment for the semiconductor industry, and turned his energies to philanthropy. “God’s been good to me, and I decided it was time to give some back,” he says. He and his wife, Peggy, live in Napa with their three children, and he is also on the board of St. Apollinaris School.

Cathy Hess’s late husband, Larry Hess, D.D.S, was a member of the Foundation Board for 12 years, and she was involved with “Day for the Queen” and other Foundation activities. Her husband’s final illness deepened her family’s connection to the hospital. “We were so grateful for the good care he received, and grateful it was available close to home,” she says. She has two daughters, born in Japan during Larry’s stint as a Navy dentist. The Hesses settled in Napa in 1974 and have been involved in many community activities. Cathy is currently a member of Community Projects.

Starr Piner and her husband, Gary, have strong ties to Queen of the Valley through the Piner family businesses, including Piner’s Ambulance, Piner’s Nursing Home, and Piner’s Guest Home. An R.N., Starr is active in the businesses and with Community Seventh-Day Adventist Church. She has three children and three grandchildren. “Now that my kids are out of the house, I wanted to do something new,” she explains. “Being on the Foundation Board is a wonderful opportunity to branch out and contribute to the community.”

Janet Trefethen’s boundless energy has helped propel Trefethen Vineyards, which she and her husband John began developing in the early 1970s, into one of the Napa Valley’s most highly regarded wineries. A journalist by training and a nationally ranked horsewoman by avocation, Janet has taken a leading role in the Napa Valley Vintners Association’s marketing and promotion efforts and frequently travels around the U.S. and Europe to spread the word about Trefethen wines and the Napa Valley. Janet served as a Foundation trustee from 1979 to 1985, and says, “After 15 years it feels good to be recycled back onto the Board of Trustees.”
